Overview of Brandenburg gate
During the time of King Frederick WIlliam I (1688), Berlin was a small walled city within a Star Fortress. In 1734, with the construction of the Berlin Customs Wall (Akzsiemauer) surrounding the city and many of its suburbs, it was a forerunner of today's Brandenburg Gate, built by Carl Gotthard Langhans Architects, as a gate. city on the way to Brandenburg an der Havel (a town in the state of Brandenburg, Germany).
Brandenburg Gate has "participated" in many important events in history. In 1806, when Napoleon's army occupied Berlin, the French Emperor transported the Quadriga (a sculpture by Johann Gottfried Schadow placed at the Brandenburg Gong) to Paris. In 1814, after Napoleon was forced to abdicate, the Quadriga was returned to Berlin, and once again, the Quadriga adorned the Brandenburg Gate.
In 1946, with the post-war division, the Brandenburg Gate was located in the Soviet zone. So when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, many tourists and locals could not access this historical work.
When the wall fell, 100 thousand people gathered to attend the official opening ceremony of the Gate in 1989. That is why today, the Gate is not only a tourist attraction, but also symbolizes an “unified Berlin".
Brandenburg gate is 26 meters high, 65.5 meters long and 11 meters deep. The gate system consists of two Baroque pylons decorated with pilasters and trophies to which the gate is attached.
In classical architecture, pilasters are an architectural element used to support and to articulate an extent of a wall. Pilasters also represent sculptural art, so they are often used as gate columns or for decoration. In addition to decorative gates, there are also simple pedestrian walkways, decorated with decorative vases in the Baroque period.
The gate consists of twelve Doric columns, six on the left and six on the right, forming five aisles. The design is based on the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, and is consistent with Berlin's classical architectural history (first Baroque, then neo-Palladian).
The gate is the first element of a "new Athens on the Spree" by Langhans. On top of the gate is a sculpture by Johann Gottfried Schadow relating to an important event in history, the Quadriga. The Quadriga is a chariot pulled by four horses - driven by Victoria - the Roman goddess of victory.
